RWE npower Future Leaders Challenge Final

npower invited teams of students from UK and Irish universities committed to tackling climate change to take part in a challenge running projects within their community highlighting sustainability issues.

From the entries submitted ten teams were selected to complete in the challenge which takes the form of a number of elements:
- attend a team building and activity focused weekend in the Lake District
- run their projects (each team received £500 from npower to help fund their project)
- attend a ‘Grand Final’ in December.

The prize for the team judged to be the most successful is a two-week trip to Antarctica. To enter the teams needed to comprise of four undergraduates from the same university but they could be from different degree disciplines and years of study. The team also needed to be supported by a lecturer to ensure they had approval to attend the weekend in the Lake District and if successful take time out of their studies to go to
Antarctica.

Applications opened in June 2009 with the closing date of 18 September 2009 and to enter teams needed to submit a five minute DVD with details about their intended project. At the closing date 13 entries were received from the following universities:
- Bath
- Bristol
- Cambridge
- City
- Durham
- Leeds
- Queen Mary
- Queens Belfast
- Reading
- SOAS
- St Andrews
- Strathclyde
- Surrey

Ahead of the closing date teams were asked to pre-register their interest and there were a number of teams who did this but were not able to complete their entry by the closing date, these teams included Birmingham, Cardiff & Edinburgh.

The judging of entries took place on 26 September and the following criteria were used to score the submissions:
- Originality and creativity
- Environmental impact
- Reality of issue
- Potential for community involvement
- Do-ability
- Enthusiasm

The ten successful teams selected to take part in the Challenge were Bristol, City, Durham, Leeds, Queen Mary, Queens Belfast, Reading, SOAS, St Andrews and Strathclyde.
